Editing Services

Before we continue…

Let’s do a quick review to be sure I’m the kind of editor you need. There are two types of editing: macro and micro. Macro edits (also called big picture or structural edits) include editorial assessments and developmental edits. Micro edits include line edits, copy edits, and proofreading – that’s what I do. Your manuscript should have gone through multiple big picture revisions, a developmental editor (if using), and critique partners and/or alpha and beta readers before it reaches me. The big pieces need to be in place before we can focus on details like sentence structure and word choice.

If you’ve checked these boxes and you’re ready to take a close look at language, let’s go on.

Services offered

What does your story need?

Line edits

focus on a manuscript at the sentence and paragraph level, with the aim of enhancing your craft. These edits address such elements as creative content, writing style, language use, emotion, tone, and clarity of prose. I’ll help you catch crutch words and phrases, make suggestions to improve your use of techniques such as showing versus telling, and offer stronger word/phrase choices to ensure each sentence works as hard as it can. Unless otherwise specified, I do a dual line and copy edit, which means I’ll also check grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, etc.

Please note: line edits are an intimate look at how you use language. They’re a more involved process than copy edits and are priced as such.

Copy edits

focus on a manuscript at the mechanical level to improve readability and bring your manuscript to that next level of professionalism. These edits address technical aspects such as: spelling, grammar, word usage, syntax, hyphens, repetition, dialogue tags, numerals, font, capitalization, etc. I’ll also check for consistency and factual accuracy. Copy edits should be done after (or in conjunction with) a line edit and before proofreading.

Proofreading

examines a manuscript in detail to ensure errors – typos, stray commas, etc. – are caught and corrected. Think of proofreading as going through your manuscript with a fine-toothed comb. This is the last line of defense before publication, and all other edits should be addressed prior to proofreading.

Pitches, blurbs, & synopses (oh my!)

Pitches, blurbs, and synopses are a necessary evil if you’re querying or publishing a book, but that doesn’t mean you have to go into battle alone. Send me what you’ve been working on, and let’s create something you’ll want to cheer for instead of curse.

Policies & Rates

Sample edits and references available upon request. I am happy to work on an individual basis to establish a payment plan that suits your needs.

Full manuscript requests: I require a 10 page sample of your manuscript to ensure we will be a good fit. Once we have agreed upon services, a $100 deposit is required to hold your slot.

A note on genres and content: I’ve a fondness for fantasy and sci-fi but will happily work with most genres. I will not, however, be a good fit for manuscripts with excessive gratuitous violence (eg: slasher horror) or racist/phobic treatment of characters. I reserve the right to decline a manuscript based on content, so please include an accurate summary when contacting me. If it becomes clear the content of your manuscript is outside of my realm of comfort, I will contact you and return the completed edits. If this happens, you will be charged only for the words completed, not for the full manuscript word count.
