but what about…?

Policies & FAQs

What genres do you work with?

I specialize in speculative fiction, romantasy, and contemporary romance, but I also enjoy and would be a good fit for other genres including contemporary fiction, literary fiction, historical fiction, mystery/thriller, and erotica. (No, I have no problems whatsoever with spice/smut, and I promise you won’t shock me.)

Is there anything you won’t edit?

At this time, I am not accepting projects intended for children or middle-grade. This may change in the future.

I will not be a good fit for manuscripts with excessive gratuitous violence (eg: slasher horror) or manuscripts that glorify or advocate for racist/phobic treatment of characters and/or any other harmful ideologies. That is not to say these themes cannot be explored in your project, but if such themes are actively promoted, I am not your editor.

While there is little I am unable to read, I do appreciate content warnings to properly prepare myself, so please include these in your intake form if applicable.

Please note: I reserve the right to decline a manuscript based on content or other factors at my discretion, so please include an accurate sample, summary, and content warnings as needed when contacting me.

If it becomes clear the content of your manuscript is outside of my realm of comfort and/or if there are gross inconsistencies in quality between your sample and full manuscript, I will contact you and return the completed edits. If this happens, you will be charged only for the words completed, not for the full manuscript word count.

Do you do developmental editing?

Short answer: no.

Longer answer: Developmental edits are macro edits, while line and copy are micro edits. The two require different skillsets, and I prefer to focus on my passion: the intricacy and beauty of language and its power in storytelling.

How would you describe your feedback style?

Precise, passionate, and compassionate. I understand the risk involved with handing your work over to someone tasked with tearing it apart, especially when that work is so close to your heart. As a neurodivergent mum of neurodivergent littles, I’m all too familiar with rejection sensitive dysphoria and that heart attack absolute panicked feeling upon receiving feedback, even knowing the person has your best interests at heart. I won’t pull any punches, but I’ll present it as gently as I can – my goal is to boost your confidence and help you grow as a writer and storyteller so you can craft a story you’re proud to release to the world.

Your proposal will include a sample edit (if applicable) to give you an idea of my feedback style.

Do you have a preferred writing/editing style?

My default and preference is the Chicago Manual of Style.

How does booking work?

Booking will vary depending on the service, but this is a general idea:

  1. Intake form: Submit your intake form and a sample of your work, which gives me an idea of your project and goals and helps us both make an informed decision. Your sample is solely for my use and will only be used to prepare your sample edit; I do not share your work with anyone.
  2. Review: Review your sample edit and your personalized proposal, which will include relevant dates, projected cost, and detailing of proposed services.
  3. Agreement and invoice: Once you’re ready to move forward, I’ll send over an agreement with terms & conditions and an invoice for the deposit to secure your spot.
  4. Confirmation: If everything is to your liking, we’ll sign the agreement, you’ll submit your deposit, and once that’s received, you’re booked!

What does the editing process look like?

Though the process varies slightly depending on services, expect something along these lines:

  1. Initial chat: We’ll first touch base about your intake form to be sure we’re on the same page. This may happen over email or in a short call or video chat, depending on your preference and scheduling constraints.
  2. Submission: Submit your full manuscript as a Microsoft Word document by the start date outlined in our agreement.
  3. Editing: While I’m working, we’ll likely be out of touch unless needed.
  4. Delivery of edits: Once I have completed your edits, I’ll email your manuscript with inline comments and suggested revisions, plus a style sheet and revision letter as applicable.
  5. Review and revision: You’ll review my comments and suggested revisions and make your changes. I’m always available for questions.
  6. Second round (if applicable): At this time, you may resubmit for a final look.
  7. Optional final chat: If you’d like, we can touch base one more time, to field any final questions or just to gush over your awesome story for a few minutes.

Your manuscript is now back in your capable hands, and I’m always available for follow-up as needed. In consideration of my time, if follow-up is extensive, further consulting fees may apply.

How do you calculate your rates/are they competitive?

Investing in professional editorial services is an investment in your writing. My rates are consistent with industry standards and those outlined by the Editorial Freelancers Association. As with any professional field, professional editors have formal training and stay informed through continuing education, and we deserve to be properly compensated for our expertise and time.

How does billing work?

If you’re booking for pitches/blurbs/synopsis, I kindly ask for 50% of my hourly rate up front, with the remaining total due upon completion.

If you’re booking for editing services, a nonrefundable 50% deposit of the projected cost is required to book your slot. Unless otherwise agreed upon, the remaining 50% is due upon delivery of the first round of edits. I am happy to accommodate payment plans if necessary.

I prefer to invoice through PayPal, though I am willing to explore other options as needed.

What is your cancellation policy?

Life happens. I get it, believe me – I have little ones.

If you decide to book my services, the cancellation policy will be outlined in the agreement tailored to your project. However, please keep in mind:

If you’ve booked with a nonrefundable deposit, that is precisely what it says. If you need to reschedule rather than cancel, I will apply your deposit toward your new booking. I will do my absolute best to accommodate reschedules, but please realize I also have a life!

I still have questions!

(Unless in rare cases such as the best way to convince your common housedragon to relinquish its patch of sun, in which case, please do let me know when you’ve found a solution.)
